Bedford Old Town Hall
Bedford, Massachusetts
Built in 1856 in the Greek Revival style with Italianate influences,
the Old Town Hall rises two-and-a-half stories above grade. At the time of
its opening, the building accommodated a primary and grammar school on the
first and second floors, with an assembly hall on the third floor. 1952
saw town offices occupying the first and second floors. The building
was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and has been
vacant since 1986.
In 1999 our firm
was retained and completed a comprehensive preservation plan that included
an existing conditions assessment with recommendations for preservation and
universal access, as well as estimated construction costs. We provided full architectural services
for the preservation and restoration of the exterior in 2000. This
work was made possible through a matching grant from the Massachusetts Historical
Commission.
We recently completed interior rehabilitation and restoration, as well as
the design and construction of a small rear wing to accommodate egress, universal
access, and restrooms.
