East Cambridge Savings Bank
Arlington, Massachusetts
In an era of automated banking and nationwide banks, a local bank wished to emphasize the customer service that differentiates them from their competitors. As the bank
chose to expand onto a newly-vacant site in Arlington, Menders, Torrey & Spencer developed a design that emphasized visibility into the building, highlighting the
people and customer service within.
The two story brick building features an abundance of glass and transparent corners of wraparound windows with views into the broad, high-ceilinged banking hall. The materials
palette of a warm ironspot brick, glass, cast stone, and bronze-colored aluminum composite panels is warm and inviting.
Site design consists of automobile and bicycle parking for employees and guests, and two drive-up lanes for ATM and teller service. Green space was a particular concern to differentiate
the site from the surrounding extensively-paved properties in this zoned "Vehicular-Oriented District." The perimeter of the site is landscaped, as are two large planting beds at the front entrance. Landscaping
is also present along the east and north sides of the building.
The proposed design required an application to the Arlington Redevelopment Board for a special permit, which was granted. Construction is currently underway and completion is expected late summer 2006.
