Falmouth Marina

Falmouth, Massachusetts - Cape Cod

The Town of Falmouth on Cape Cod’s Buzzard Bay owns and operates a public pleasure boat marina on the inner harbor. Through the public design review process we were chosen to design a new multi-purpose building on the Falmouth Harbor replacing a smaller harbormaster’s office.

The expanded building program was accommodated within a compact plan to maintain the residential scale of the previous building at the site. The harbormaster’s office has been placed at the front of the building for visual control over the activities on the harbor. Behind it are reception and administration spaces for the marina, and shower and toilet facilities for marina patrons. On the side facing the Town Common, toilets are accessible to the public. This cost-efficient design was constructed during the marina's off-season and placed in operation the following spring.

The Marina office building’s compact plan has been enclosed within a traditional “Cape Cod Cottage”. This grouping of residentially scaled end-gabled forms has been clad in the local vernacular of weathered shingles and white painted wood trim. The central brick chimney and double hung windows add to the residential character and the white trellis and planting bed lend to the charm of a seaside estate.
