MIT Parking and Card Office

Cambridge, Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Parking and Card Office was being relocated to a more student-friendly location in Building W-20, the student union. Menders, Torrey and Spencer was retained to refurbish the basement location. Balancing the needs of the various consitutencies being relocated to the space was a welcome challenge, as was devising a circulation solution to the long lines resulting when the office is overrun at the start of the academic year. Budget concerns and working within an existing space with its own constraints also proved challenging. Our solution features an open circular circulation core, with parking functions along one side and card functions along the other. Separate entry and exit points prevent congestion during the busy times at the start of the semesters. Adjunct offices are located north and south of this core space, and each feature their own points of entry.

Construction was completed April 2006.
