Temple Israel Preschool
Boston, Massachusetts
In order to provide
full-time day care facilities for preschool-aged children of Temple
members, local residents and medical area employees, Temple Israel
renovated ground-level classrooms in the educational wings of its
Riverway complex. The center has been designed to function as
a weekday preschool with four classrooms which can be easily converted
to seven classrooms for weekend used by the Temple Israel Hebrew
school. Functional flexibility, economy of means and attention
to detail were the requirements for this dual use basement renovation
which incorporated the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts
Architectural Access Board, the Massachusetts Building Code and
Office for Children requirements for Day Care Centers.

The central corridor's load bearing masonry walls have been refinished
and enlivened with color, light, and form. Sculptural room entrance
indicators are color-coded to their rooms and visually reduce
the apparent length of the basement corridor. The preschool entrance
has been playfully highlighted through similar use of color, light
and geometry. The classrooms have made the most of natural light
and have supplemented it with efficient direct and indirect lighting.
Wall surfaced are functional tact and magnetic marker boards.
The scope of renovations included new heating, ventilation and
air-conditioning, wiring, floor, ceiling and wall finishes, new
and rehabilitated windows and access to a new play yard. The toilet
rooms were completely renovated to meet new needs and codes. Convenient
and ample storage has been incorporated into the plan, and a preschool
office suite has been provided adjacent to the entrance.
