Robert Treat Paine Estate, "Stonehurst"

Waltham, Massachusetts

Located in the center of 134 acres of woodlands and meadows, the Robert Treat Paine House (Stonehurst) is a National  Historic Landmark and the only house in Massachusetts designed by H.H. Richardson that is open to the public.   Invisible from the street, Stonehurst is reached by a quarter- mile, rhododendron-lined winding drive. The house crowns a landscape designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

H.H. Richardson addition

The interior of the Paine House is the largest remaining domestic interior designed by H.H. Richardson. The Great Hall, with its terra cotta red walls and stenciled Japanese designs, anticipates the flowing spaces of modern architecture. Another significant feature of Stonehurst is the grand staircase. With its carved paneled woodwork, magnificent marble and tile fireplaces, original furnishings, and spectacular colors, the interior of the Paine House is unequaled in the work of H.H. Richardson.

Claude Emanuel Menders, Architects Inc. recently completed construction administration of the exterior restoration of Stonehurst and has completed a condition assessment report that covered preservation, universal access, and mechanical systems.  Currently the firm is also participating in the production of an interior conditions assessment report, funded in part by a Getty grant.
