Wayside Inn
Sudbury, Massachusetts
Master Plan, 2006
Menders, Torrey & Spencer, Inc. provided consulting services related to assessing and evaluating the historical architectural resources, restoration needs and strategies,
adaptive reuse potential and budget analysis for the master plan of the 120-acre Wayside Inn. This is truly a special place, in Longfellow’s words, “A place of slumber and of dreams,
remote among the wooded hills!” The goal of the multi-disciplinary master planning team was to preserve the Wayside Inn’s unique character while revitalizing its meaning for a new
generation of visitors. The process began by asking how the Wayside Inn could revitalize its multiple roles of hospitality, education, recreation, icon of American history, with an
expanded use that builds on its legacy, sparks broad interest and community support, brings in revenue, and can be sustained by the organization. The master plan was completed in
spring 2006.

Dining Room Rehabilitation, 2006
Along with the master plan, the Inn also embarked on an interiors improvement, beginning with upgrades to the worn dining room. Menders, Torrey and Spencer led the rehabilitation
of the dining room, which included new ceilings, lighting, interior finishes, code compliance measures, and improved life safety systems.
