Allin Church
Dedham, MA

Originally constructed in the 1820s, the Greek Revival Allin Congregational Church enjoys a prominent position in downtown Dedham, Massachusetts. Late 19th century additions include a kitchen, Parish Hall and extension of the organ loft.  Claude Emanuel Menders, Architects Inc. first became involved with the Allin Church in 1999, when an exterior conditions assessment and a space needs evaluation were completed.

Using the exterior conditions assessment as a guide, and with the assitance of a Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund grant, the church embarked on an exterior preservation project in 2000.  Work on  the exterior envelope included repointing of masonry, slate roof replacement, repair (and when necessary, replacement) of wooden elements, window repair, gutter and downspout repair, structural reinforcement, restoration of the weathervane and belfry, and repainting.  Exterior preservation work was completed in 2002.

Claude Emanuel Menders, Architects Inc. continued the relationship with Allin Church through Phase II, the design and construction of a new addition and rehabilitation of the existing building.  The addition provides a new daily entrance to the church, new office space, and a new meeting room.  Universal access is a key component of the addition, which includes an elevator, accessible restrooms, and improved circulation.  Construction was completed in summer 2003.
