Temple Sinai

Summit, New Jersey

We are excited to congratulate Temple Sinai on their recent rededication!  Construction was completed in October on the rehabilitation and addition at Temple Sinai.  The rededication was held October 24, 2004.  Please scroll down for pictures.

The Temple consists of a large and elegant 1911 Colonial Revival style house with a considerable 1963 Modernist adition at the rear.  While the former Todd Estate Mansion continued to have value to the congregates for its sense of warmth and connectedness, the congregation was outgrowing the space.

A 1998 Master Plan revealed the need for expanded space.  The Master Plan proposed to restore the former Todd Estate, substantially rehabilitate the 1963 addition and build a new addition. The new addition was designed to be compact in order to minimize the intrusiveness that a large institution can create in a residential neighborhood.  The design process ensued,  with an addition encompassing a new sanctuary,  classrooms and expandable social halls for various life cycle events.

Below is the main level plan, with the new sanctuary overlooking the wooded site.  Adjacent areas permit increased attendance levels and functions in the sanctuary and social hall through the use of flexible wall components. The new daily entrance is located on the lower level along with the main reception offices and religious school. On the third level are the clergy offices and additional classrooms.

The 1998 Master Plan allowed Temple Sinai to identify its current and future religious and educational program needs.  The initial fundraising phase was completed in 2000 and the design phases were completed in April 2003.  Construction began in summer 2003 and is scheduled for completion in October 2004.  Following are some construction images taken in September and October 2004.
