Private Residence
This residence, nestled into a quiet, wooded neighborhood
was completed in 1998. It is a full renovation of and addition to a 1960’s
house which was sited diagonally to the street, allowing it to be tucked
away though still visible from the street. The new exterior materials consist
of custom horizontal cedar siding with painted trim. The structure has simple,
clean lines, its linear form interrupted by a cross-axial raised clerestory,
thus creating a focal point where a trellis services as an entrance and offers
protection through its transparent roof. The cantilevered decks extend horizontally
into the landscape where stones, stone walls, gardens, trees and shrubbery
integrate the house into its naturalistic setting.

The low sprawling
roof line creates a pleasant surprise upon entering this spacious and airy
interior, where high ceilings and ample glazing form a backdrop for an array
of complimentary materials. The colors of the bamboo wood floors and pine
ceilings lend warmth and texture. The continuous windows in concert with
the granite fireplaces and cherry kitchen cabinetry create an environment
rich in light and contrast. Expansive open spaces to view the art gallery
or enjoy the view to the outside are balanced with areas for privacy. An
alcoved office and built-in den with custom furnishings create zones for
office work and relaxation. The upper level (shown in the top images) consists
of a kitchen, dining area, formal living room, den, office, master bedroom,
master bathroom and guest bedrooms with bathrooms. The lower level is a guest
suite consisting of a bedroom and bathroom adjacent to the billiard room
and foyer with earth-colored Indonesian tiles (shown in bottom image) as
an extension of an exterior terrace. |
